Launch of the Just City Project: A new adventure for the city of Bertoua - Cameroon

On 5 December 2024, Bertoua, a vibrant city in Cameroon, marked a significant milestone in its urban development with the official launch of the Just City project. This transformative initiative was introduced during an inaugural workshop titled “Waste: Stakeholders, Interests, Roles, and Responsibilities for a Just City,” held at Sembe Lecco Park.
The event brought together over fifty participants from various sectors of waste management, including key city officials such as the Prefect of Lom et Djerem and the Mayor of Bertoua. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to fostering equitable urban sanitation, emphasizing the need for harmonious collaboration among all stakeholders involved in waste management.
The FES Resident Representative in Cameroon praised the warm reception of the project and underscored the importance of upholding the principles of a Just City, ensuring that Bertoua serves as a model for other cities across Cameroon.
Key Focus Areas of the Workshop
The discussions centered on:
An introduction to the Just City project and its guiding principles;
A comprehensive analysis of Bertoua’s waste cycle, identifying challenges and opportunities;
Planned activities for 2025, outlining actionable steps for sustainable urban sanitation.
Ahead of the workshop, the FES team paid a courtesy visit to the Mayor of Bertoua, who highlighted the East region’s potential as a hub for innovative, justice-driven urban development.
With the Just City project now underway, Bertoua is poised to become a beacon of equitable and sustainable urban planning, setting a precedent for cities across Cameroon.
